My father recently died and Delanoys were our first choice for acting as our funeral partners. I use funeral partners rather than funeral directors because John and Julie involved the family at every step of the funeral planning. No detail was too small for them to step in and take care of, to provide the smoothest and most unobtrusive service we could possibly expect.

Delanoys don't take centre stage in the funeral, the family do; Delanoys make sure that everything is taken care of so that the family have nothing to worry about. Delanoys were so sensitive in organising our Mam’s funeral. Julie and John are easy to trust. At a time when it is hard to think clearly, they take away the worry and stress by stepping you through what needs to happen. They listened and responded with tasteful suggestions. They keep in touch and are very clear on what you do and don’t need to think about. In the end, we had the most wonderful day which celebrated Mam’s life with all the people who knew and loved her. At a sad time, you are very safe in their hands.

From the day our Dad passed right up to the day we laid him to rest they went above and beyond in making the day perfect even with a few last minute touches and surprises for the family. My husband, Bill, said he wanted a no fuss, simple funeral and that is what Delanoy arranged for us. My daughter and I have nothing but praise for the professionalism, caring and compassion shown to us by Julie and John. They were like friends we had known for a long time and nothing was a trouble. After the incident on Wednesday, when John was injured whilst carrying out his duty, we wanted to reaffirm why we walk in front of the hearse.

Thank you to every driver in Easington today who showed us the utmost respect and held back to allow our cortege to pass safely. It truly meant a great deal to ourselves and the family.

Walking in front of the hearse is a long-standing tradition and a final act of care. It symbolises leading the deceased on their final journey and also lets other road users know a funeral procession is taking place.

We never experienced anything like Wednesday’s incident, and we hope we never do again. All we ask is for patience, awareness and respect when you see a funeral cortege.

During my wonderful dad's final journey, a driver overtook the hearse and funeral cars. It is a difficult and heartbreaking day enough as it is. This makes me so sad. Xx
